Defending champions National University (NU) Pep Squad blew away the competition again this year in the annual Universities Athletics Association of the Philippines Cheer Dance Competition (UAAPCDC) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
NU’s Native-American inspired theme scored them an outstanding 677.5 points that won them the gold in the competition. Their almost flawless performance garnered them the top score in almost all of the criteria (except tosses, which went to Adamson University) with the Dance category scored at 369 out of a possible 400.
According to NU Pep Squad’s Head Coach Ghicka Bernabe, after last year’s competition they worked with other coaches for their performance this year.
“After the competition last year, nag-colaboration na kami with other coaches. Nag brain storming na kami ng mga bagong stunts”, she said.
NU took home a grand prize of P340 000 plus assorted items from the competition sponsors.
The NU Pep Squad performance outdid all other competitors, leaving the 1st runner – up in the form of the UP Pep Squad behind at 658 points.
Across all squads, UP Pep Squad is the only one who has an advocacy in their performance with equality. Their performance did enough for them to take home P200 000 plus assorted goodies.
Completing the podium finishers was the Chinese Martial Arts inspired UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which garnered 625.0 points and a take home of P140 000.
The competition was judged by two parts 400 total points for Dance includes their choreography, techniques, overall effectiveness and group execution, and another 400 points for Cheerleading includes their tumbling, stunts, pyramids and tosses.
After the main competition, FEU Pep Squad emerged as the champions in the UAAP Group Stunts Competition with a total of 258.5 points. UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe finished second with 251.0 points, and last year’s champions NU Pep Squad ended in third place with 239.5 points.
“5 months kami nagtraining. Dugo’t pawis ang ibinigay namin dito.,” said FEU’s coach when asked regarding his feelings about the group stunts competition.
The 2014 UAAP Cheerdance Competion was hosted by Boom Gonzales of ABS CBN Sports + Action, and Jessy Mendiola. The big dome was jampacked with a crowd of 22,093 spectators.
